Well by nature – I am very open to other cultures and would pretty much be non-judgmental about their pattern of thinking! But I am ANTI – in any way to prejudice, indifference and disrespectful behaviour towards Indians, especially since in India – we go out of our way to be friendly to any person visiting our country.

I am currently undergoing the WORST vacation of my life at Bangkok, Thailand. Our passports were stolen at the market a on Friday (8th June 2012) and after retracing our steps and several unsuccessful attempts  over the weekend and unfriendly responses from wax-doll faced Thai people, on Monday – we got in touch with our Embassy and started out on the regular process to fly back as  soon as possible.

Stuck in a foreign country is no fun – when you do not feel safe. Very frequently Thai people on the streets come up to you – smile a fake smile and ask you where you come from. The same goes with taxi drivers, the tuk-tuk fellows (I will write a separate blog on the tuk-tuk buggers too!) The minute they know you are from India – people smirk in groups, they have a demeaning attitude (whether you come from the North or the South), shopkeepers refuse to give your discount or bargain, waiters at the hotels refuse to give you fingerbowls ( all the time bowing and placing finger bowls to a group of Westerners at the next table). The only thing that the one-track minded Thai people understand are :-

1. The colour of your skin
2. The language of the ‘Baht’

The Thai women are increasingly greedy – and the expression in their eyes, change from being extremely friendly and flirtatious to being downright rude and cruel depending on the wad of notes you flash before them. I went to a shop – where the owner and the saleswomen (all Thais) asked my sister and me  the cost of the watch I was wearing, the T-shirts we wore, the areas we went shopping to, the hotel we stayed in – and a lot of uneasy and probing questions, so that they can weigh you as a customer. The minute they figure out you might probably be a window-shopper, their demeanor towards you changes – they stop short of asking you to ‘get out’.

The worst experience I have had is that of physical assault in a market AFTER purchasing a couple of wallets at Indra square, Prathunam. AFTER I paid the woman  the amount due – we wanted to check the pieces she had given us. She started abusing us – saying that we were ‘just Indians’ and should NOT check the pieces that we had already purchased! On more heated discussions – the Thai saleswoman threw wallets at me, in a fit of rage – asking me to get out of her shop, and hit my aged Father with a stick- telling him “to GO TO INDIA” ! If this is not racism, what is!

I refuse to spend any of my hard-earned money in this place filled with pimps, prostitutes and disgustingly behaved people. My expectations of this wonderful country – and its history have definitely come crashing down. The self -centered, manipulative and avaricious Thai people have sure lost my respect. And I will most definitely boycott Thailand-made products as much as I can!

P.S. Still in Bangkok and waiting to leave as soon as possible

        Dear Mathangi,

I am sorry that Thai people treated you badly. I am 100% Thai and they also treated me badly at a 5 star hotel in BKK. They like WHITE people period. Even if you spent exact same amount of money as the WHITE people paid in the hotel, you still will be treated as a second class( NOT all of them but I ran to a lot and almost every time). I am so sick of it and needed a break from BKK for a long while. It happened to often that I NO longer want to put up with it. The sad part is I AM A 100% THAI BUT LIVE IN US.

For example, one incident on the trip this month, one of the hotel employee ( only one out of 100 of them) was very rude and condescended to me. There is a candy man in front of the restaurant on the hotel property was making a fresh candy for young children for FREE. But when I asked her how much for the candy, her response was it is for customers at Trade Vic Restaurant only( the making of this candy is right in front of the restaurant). Meanwhile me and my son still standing there watching the candyman making the candy( we enjoyed watching him making it in different type of animal figures). I saw white kids who just came down from the elevator( NOT from the restaurant) will all get this candy for FREE without having to be a customer of this restaurant at all. The candy man probably heard the conversation I had with this hotel employee in Thai and knew it wasn’t true that you have to be restaurant’s customer to get this candy. He handed two of his candies he made to my son with a big smile on his face.

The second incident with the same employee but this time at kids club. My son and two friends from Australia went to the kids club to watch a movie for about 15 minutes. But we had made an reservation for the tour and need to go out now ,so we( Australian mom and I) went up to the kids club to get the kids. The kids of course didn’t want to leave we then asked her if we can borrow the movie for the evening. She replied in Thai to me saying that there is a renting place near the hotel you can rent with a fee. I then said to her, OK. She then turned around face the Australian mom ( she didn’t know we’re friends) and told the Australian mom that she can borrow this movie from the hotel this evening. Is she for real? I was thinking in my head. I am right here just asking you if I can borrow the movie from you and your answer was ” NO” and you have a guts to turned around and offer the same movie that I just asked to borrow from you to this ” white” lady.

But I still left hotel a good review for the service I received from other employees. I didn’t take this one lady attitudes into account for the rest of the employees who had done such a wonderful job while I was there (Anantara Riverside Resort and Spa, Bangkok).

So I hope you feel better after reading my story…However, you are correct Thai people are very prejudice people…they like “White” people and worship them.

I’m thai and i can gaurantee you Thai people are not that bad but some are and it’s unlucky of you to have met those people… To me You guys seem to choose to visit the shopping spot instead of experiencing the culture or the natural paradise. so what do u expect when you enter a shop , come in look at things buy them and go,and that’s exactly what those people expect from you MONEY..i’m not defending for my country just pointing out the facts here..Thailand can be dangerous in some areas but apart from that i proudly say it’s paradise literally paradise and the friendlyness here you can’t discovered any where else…and yes we do have an attitude towards skin color but it’s not in a racist way just that commercially in thailand women with brighter skin tone are supposingly gorgeous and beautiful(without any reason whatsoever-3-) and again i feel so sorry for what happened

Thats terrible mats! So unfortunate that you are going through this. I hope & pray you reach back home soon. These racial issues against indians exist in most countries partly due to the manner in which some of our fellow citizens behave generally in these places – especially in south east asian countries.

Thanks man! I want to get back soon too and safely with my parents. I am surprised that a place like Bangkok that survives solely on tourism is so hostile to tourists. As for us behaving badly – I must say there are many foreigners who come to our country and are rude (I myself have witnessed that) – but we overlook that in the name of hospitality and support them against our fellow people . I still wonder at the illlogical reasoning of white – skin! Unbelievable!

It has been over a year and I don’t know if you will read this, but..
        1. Bangkok is far from “survives solely on tourism”. Bangkok is not Phuket, all the big corporations are here. Income from tourism in Bangkok is really insignificant compared to the rest.
        2. The real Bangkok native residents are nice. Those merchants you meet on cheap markets (e.g. Prathunam) are not really the residents of Bangkok (and they don’t pay tax too). I myself as a resident of Bangkok faced the same problem as you did too! These merchants (especially ladies) are really rude sometimes. My advice is to leave them if you can’t get them to talk to you nicely – there’re always other shops, right? But then again, those other shops in other areas will usually cost you more for the same item though will talk to you nicely.. it’s a trade-off you have to deal with, ask yourself which one do you prefer. I myself always shop in the mall and the service is on par of well developed countries if not more.
        3. It’s true what Vimal said – Some people react badly to Indians due to their past experiences. In the past, Indians cheated on many Thais and that made up the stereotype we have today. Moreover, the scent/odor that some of the Indians have really turned down many people. Additionally, many Indians are really ignorant on public manners and don’t behave according to local customs. All these combined make it easy for Thais to generalize Indians and avoid interacting with them. I’m sorry to say this but it’s true. However, I understand that people are different and a few from India are really well educated and behaved – I treated them well as a result.

So, I hope you have a better understanding. Cheers 🙂

I dont blame them completely. thailand is a great country, people are full of warmth. they are welcoming too.I am Indian, and i have meet quite a few locals here, tuk tuks , taxi drivers etc. i think it is how you behave

Even my wife’s friends tell me how much they dislike Indians. P art of the is due to skin color. Another part is how much Thais have in common with Indians( language, history) I deal with racism on a daily basis. But that really only in Bangkok outside the city people are much different and pleasent.

I am Pakistani . I visited Thailand first time was four years ago . i found them cheap greedy racist and inhuman people . i have so many stories regarding these bitches but one of the story i want to share . in MBK i was shopping suddenly i felt nature is calling me ( i needed to take a leak :P) i started walk towards toilet sign when i reached there a big fat ugly Thai lady stopped me and asked me for money to use toilets (i had only dollars and one thousand bills of baht) i tried searching for bloody 2 baht but i could not find pressure of piss was so much and it started paining i was almost crying and begging her to let me in she said no change no toilet i was out of control . an idea struck to my mind i saw a garbage can with plastic bag i opened my pant and took a leak in front of that bitch and every one after releasing my yellow sweat i walked on smiling and showed massive middle finger to that bitch . now i go to Thailand every year and treat them as shit and i feel good because these little turds should be treated like this . i go to Thailand i make so many fa- rang (white man in Thai language) friends who also hate them then i get drunk with my fa rang friends and i get laid with these cheap sluts . they made me like this i was a good tourist but they have turned me into a sex tourist . plus i don’t spend much money because i know enough about Thailand so they cant make profit out of me and i tell even every tourist i see about their cheap tricks and prices and places where they can cut these bloody money suckers . i am sending this from a cafe where i ordered one beer cost 40 baht and free wi-fi so i am sitting here at least 2 hours sucking all the bytes and they wont have much profit from a khek ( referring Indian guy in offensive way ) . last thing i wanna share Thais have a saying that if you see snake and Indian kill Indian first and let snake go this true and search more about this greedy and drooling over money nation i don’t give a shit about them i abuse them and they cant say anything back to me because they are cowards too . bye love from land of fake smiles and cheap holes .

first , about the mbk’s toliet things.. you have to respect the rule that in mbk everyone have to pay 2 baht for using bathroom.. if you wondering why , it is because those 2 baht are for tissue you use , the soaps , the water sprayer and etc. you have to admit that mbk’s restrooms are pretty clean and worth paying .. And for your excuse that you have only dollars and 1,000 bills of baht .. You know what they can give you a change of 998 baht if you pay .. By the way i think it’s impossible that you are here for shopping and have only 1 note of 1,000 baht in your pocket .. I just found it hard to believe .. and thanks to your comment it show clearly why us thai people dislike indians or in this case pakistani .. We dislike you because you disrespect us first by your behaviour.. Where else in the world should the grown man take a leak in plastic garbage in the mall ?!
and by the way are you traveling alone? For 2 baht you can ask any thais who are going to the bathroom .. I believe that there must be one person give you that 2 bahts .. i think you chose the wrong ways to slove the problem and for anyone who want to go to mbk but don’t want to pay for 2 baht there is a free bathroom on 3th floor tokyo side for you to use but not as clean as the paid one .. Another reason why we dislike you guys is because most of your fellows who live in our country don’t have manner at all.. For example, when we give them a seat in bts or subway they don’t even say thank you.. They don’t have a queue at all .. the indians cut into my line many times that i couldn’t count.. They walk like the whole street is theirs and so on .. if you think this offensive , this is how your comment make us feel.. i want to be clear so others won’t misunderstood that Not every girls in thailand are prostitues !! You talk like your country don’t have a hole!! Would you like if i say pakistani girls are slut , prostitue .. Of course you don’t !! .. I don’t deny that there are these kind of people in my country but you also have to admit that there are people like this every where .. So stop look down upon other country.. I hope this comment make you know that you have ill-logic that thais can’t talk back to you because they are cowards .. Last , if you hate thailand that much then don’t come to our country because we don’t want to welcome you either..

Good contribution bankokkian! I returned to UK after 5 years of teaching English at a University in Phitsanulok. Even there, some 440 kms north of Bangkok, spitefulness, hatred and dislike of dark-skinned Asians was very rife. I have had most of my higher education and career in London covering 40 years. I was a Principal Officer of Her Majesty’s Civil Service.
Despite my cheerful stance and friendly compassionate attitude, I found the so called Authorities at the University I worked, had an incurable ego problem where they thought they knew everything (including everything about English language, literature and culture) and need no advise! Especially if it came from a foreigner. Not all foreigners were treated the same. In the presence of a white man (he could be there teaching English just on the side, with fun and frolic as the main occupation); they would be crawling and kneeling.
The first year students were rather hard to straighten up as some of them come from varied and from difficult backgrounds. They come straight after a selection test at the University following Mathayom education. So no 2 year course similar to A Levels. Once, a couple of students complained to the Head of the English Dept saying that I have been warning them about eating in class. I was called to explain as to why I did that and was advised to be ‘gentle’ with them. The Head of English was a 27 year old Thai teacher. A few months later, I was told that my contract will not be renewed (after 5 years). You can read what followed here: http://www.ajarn.com/ajarn-street/postbox/ive-given-up-looking-too/

Excuse me, this is not correct……that was a Pakistani and not an Indian, two different countries, in case you don’t know. And I am sure this person is an exception of a Pakistani………..His behaviour is disgraceful to say the least and won’t go down well even with the Pakistanis.
I am a British Indian, now in Bangkok for one and a half years. Overall, I am enjoying my stay in Thailand so far. Most of the Thai people are lovely and courteous, and the country is beautiful, and very child friendly.
But I can feel and see the farang-worship tendency here at a lot of places, which I am afraid, is doing no good to this country. And because Thailand doesn’t always see the best of the west, it adds to the whole problem. I have never met as many rude and law-breaking westerners back in the west where I lived for many years as I have here just over the last couple of years. They are, in most cases allowed to get away with their sick behaviour, which would have never happened back even in their own countries, as many Thais hold them in high esteem simply because of their skin colour. So instead of judging Indian simply on the basis of their skin colour and spending capacity, or body odour as some people suggest, it would do good to form an opinion for anybody, white, black or brown, based on facts that really matter to Thailand.

No wonder there women get fucked 10 times in a day with different farangs to make money . A country of bloody whores and racist cunts. They deserve that their mothers and sisters suck falang cock every hour to get some baht and they will still love Falangs because no matter how much their women are fucked by falangs….at least they get some good baht. Thailand is too much exaggerated by falang bloggers for being a very nice destination with lovely people just because they are treated well by bar girls and money sucking whores because their dollars can be converted into too much baht.
I was first feeling bad fucking a thai whore but then I was happy because these racist cunts deserve to get fucked hard by foreigners for filthy amount of baht.
All those whores and cunts in a shop are nice to westerners so may be they can find a husband or a life time sponsor.

Please excuse your manners and rudeness. Your existence and language should be erased. You are the ignorance dude who should just die from your bad language. Your comment is based on biases and personal ‘hatred’ against Thais. I am sure you had NOTHING else to criticise Thais except from the fact that poor women were a prostitude. Judging by your way of thinking, it makes me certain that your brain were affect by the fact that your mother IS ACTUALLY a prositude? Your perception place you lower than a scum 🙂 Oh sorry for my rudeness, lets get to the point. First of all, I need to EDUCATE you how normal or good people perceive the world.

        * It is undeniable that in fact, there are a number of thai women who choose to be aprostitude in comparison to other countries. This is because Thailand is still a developing country where poor people are striving for money. Therefore, tourist or scum like you may experience the negative aspect of stealing and unsafe environment. I am also annoyed that many Thai women tries to seduce the western, or what you called ‘sucking faring cock’ for money in order to escape their poverty. We cannot choose which family and parents we were born to, can you? Instead of enjoying mocking, swearing and looking down on the poor, have you ever asked them if they want actually want to choose this path?. You were blind enough to be SUCKED FOR MONEY like your title ‘Thailand can suck my cock’. Instead of enjoying reaching your climax and criticising thai women afterwards, why don’t you provide opportunity for help them escaping from poverty such as by donation and encourage your people to help them out? You really are not sorry for those at disadvantages but instead, not only you placed your feeling first but you also blinded others. Poor you.

        * Like what i said, you were blinded by the negative aspect of Thailand. I am assuming that because thai women chose not to suck your little dick because you are Pakistan, but they chose ‘Farang’ instead? So your feeling was hurt, pressured and had to let it go on this ‘I HATE BANGKOK- ITS RACIST!’ block?

        * Your comments make me questioned the Pakistan in majority. Your way of thinking make me understand why your country always have wars with others. I am very certain that more people are racist to Pakistan than Thai, and just by posting this block, your country just have more haters. Your NARROW view makes Thai and in fact other countries to continuously being racist and not welcomed. Congratulation, you just brought a shame to your country and this will be exposed for the whole world to see like what you desired.

PS: I am Thai and a girl who is very proud of her country, so please rest in peace ‘Mr. Thailand-can-suck-my-cock’, posted on April 17, 2014 at 3:12 pm and the owner of this block. Your thoughts, your world and your space were humorously narrowed.

I do understand what you say about Thai’s though – but don’t you think Indians are the same? Rather all asian races have the exact same attitude licking up to white skin and hating darker people?? And isn’t there so much hatred and jealousy in India as well? Ask any black person visiting India – they will tell you how horrible their experience was. And whatever the thais are – at least they made a better, cleaner and more liveable country than what India is today? Honestly I am ashamed to be Indian – when I see how Indians behave towards white skin and how they treat each other – it makes me even more sick. If I keep a low profile and pretend to be a westerner in India (I live in Europe) then they are all very nice towards me but when they find out I am an Indian too, then most other Indians just end up despising me – they really really hate me so much in my own country I cannot tell you. Indians and asians in general are all more racist than westerners….but I guess everyone is racist in the world these days. Indians are hated mostly everywhere because most Indian travellers are cheap, badly behaved and have little or no respect for the countries they visit, and the rich Indians are far too arrogant, they treat everyone like a slave and have a huge superiority attitude which actually comes from their inferiority complex of being born in such a filthy country as India. But that said – I think Indians at least have SOME self pride of being Indians – they don’t seem to hate themselves as much as the oriental races like thai, chinese and even japanese hate themselves. These people have no pride in the way they look and have a clearly western view of good looks…they hate their own mirror image and seem to be extremely unhappy miserable people wherever I met them… i’ve stopped interacting with them actually as I never met one oriental who wasn’t totally obsessed with becoming white and worshipping white culture and hating their own…it’s sad how all these people can be so self hating. Majority of them will do anything to escape and live in a white country…even if their own countries are perfectly nice places to live. Anyway – I was thinking of going to thailand for a visit again but decided not to – I can’t stand greedy filthy people and thailand seems to be just a sex shop for poor travellers, thais in general seem very dirty diseased greedy self hating and really ugly people….I would probably hate being around so many of them. I am far too sophisticated and upper class to deal with such a dirty culture – maybe I will go to Singapore as they seem more sophisticated at least. I don’t care about the beauty in thailand – if it’s such a dishonest country with thieves everywhere then who cares to go there.. i’d rather go to brazil in that case at least the brazilians are hot looking.

Mathangi, I have come to Thailand to teach English, all my white friends told me how amazing and spiritual this place is, I’m living in Surat Thani I have only been here just 1 week and I hate it!!The thais are disgustingly racist!! I am an extremely educated person, I have 2 degrees plus 3 masters! I also grew up in England so essentially am English, but I have had nothing but dirty looks, unhelpful idiots!! And lousy food!! I am planning on cutting short my contract and leaving asap! I also will never come back to Thailand!!!

I hope you get out of there soon and to a place of your liking 🙂 Thank you for taking time to read my blog and for leaving your comments 🙂

Thank you for posting your blog, I honestly thought I was imagining it all. I’m so disgusted that they were aggressive towards your father!! This maddened me!! Thais are meant to be Buddhist, and buddhism promotes respecting all being and compassion, I think this is why I am so much more shocked! If you want to go somewhere where you will be treated very well I would say go to Alghero in Sardinia (Italy) it is by far one of the most beautiful places I have been to. The people are warm and friendly, they can’t do enough for you, the food is amazing and the whole place has a special energy about it. x

The least we could do is warn people who plan a trip to Thailand – that their expectations of exoticism are sadly drowned in absolute bad behavior by the locals 😦

I am from bangalore and visited thailand recently, nov 2012, i didnt feel very secure there, i had a heated argument with one of the cashier at 7/11, she was rude and racial towards me, she didnt bill my items and told me to carry on in another line and started to bill a white guy, i just ignored it, and while billing i told the lady in the counter to cancel a particular item (mind u the billing was not complete when i told her to cancel an item) and this lady told the racist thai that i am asking to cancel one of the item, on hearing this she stared shouting ‘why cancel’ and kept on repeating it and shouting at me. I did not react much and told her that i dont have to give her reason to cancel while billing, just that i dont need it. After the billing was done and the payment made, my husband and i told the cashier that we need to talk to the manager but she never told us who her manager was, and she pointed at another person who was an emplyoee and said thats my manager. My husband insisted on seeing the manager but we could not, as she was not willing to direct us to her manager.
Eventually i gave her left right and centre and told her ‘Shame on you’ and i really meant it, and got out of that store.
But it left a bad taste of thailand in my mind, i would never go back to that country again even if somebody offers me a free trip.

Indians out there, please don’t be fooled by all the glowing praise that other lighter skinned races (whites, Chinese, etc) heap upon Thailand. Indians will inevitably have a different experience, and what’s good for the goose isn’t always good for the gander. Choose your tourist destinations more carefully than whites/ Chinese people do, as we Indians aren’t always welcome.

I encountered numerous instances of racism directed towards me on my past few visits to Thailand. After a certain point, I start to wonder why the heck I even bother to visit that country, whether it be for vacation or for business purposes. The racism there is often blatant towards indians, and other brown and dark-skinned people, while farangs (white-skinned people) get treated with admiration and the Thais are generally very subservient to them.

Likewise on Thai Airways as well, I encountered utter rudeness and racist behavior from certain members of the cabin crew. I can keep narrating various experiences, but the list gets a bit too long and tiring after a while. So to sum it all up, if you are Indian or African or some other brown or dark-skinned individual, it’s best to avoid that country, unless of course your livelihood depends on you being there, and you simply cannot avoid it.

If you want to visit a country in South East Asia where Indians are treated with a lot of respect by the majority of the population, and you are very, very unlikely to encounter any racism, that would be Indonesia. I’ve been living there for the past 10 years, and all I can say is that for the most part, in more than 90% of my encounters (approx.), the people here are genuinely NOT racist towards Indians and brown-skinned people. They are very tolerant and gracious, and they exhibit real class, friendliness and humanity, something in short supply in Thailand. Do visit Indonesia and see for yourself, it is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, and has some of the friendliest, non-racist people in the world as far as I have experienced.

      Hi Hari,

I am working in BKK for almost last two years, I can only say that yes they are extremely racist with Indians/Pakistanis/Bangladeshi. Most of the time they are not able to recognize me as an Indian and they will talk to me politely. Once they ask me where I am from and if I tell them that I am from India, their expressions will totally change and they would tell me I dont look like Indian. When I ask them why they will say that u look good and Indians dont look good. They give me great respect and service till the time I inform them that I am indian coz they mostly think I am from Turkey or Middle East. They dont give a shit about Indians, they hate us like anything. I see same thing everyday in bars, taxis, malls, shops anywhere u go. I wont say all thais are like this many of these guys are so good that you would love them. Also I know many thaes those who hate living in Thailand as they say that people here are fake, they have hatred for you in heart and will show with a smile that they love u. I really wanna get out of this country, trying hard. U will find the same culture in the offices aswell coz Thai people live a relx life and Indians usually work hard which thais hate coz they also have to work as all the work is related. I would suggest you if u wanna come here just come for sometime and try not to stick to this place or else after sometime u might feel that why the hell u r living here and u will hate these guys here.

Just to make things more clear: Thais also have a reason for this hatred .
      1. We Indians dont know how to behave and this is true(I tell same thing to my frnds those who are here.
      2. We Indians act like we own everyone when we pay them.
      3. We Indians tell thai people that Indians are crazy and stupid.
      4. We Indians really smell sometime (personally met many Indians) however thais think that Pakistani/Nepalese Burmese and Bangladeshis all are indians. All these nationalities smell and thats a fact. Thais really are very well groomed and hygiene and food is their first priority, so they should hate us if we cant take a bath or use deo.
      5. We make a mess after couple of drinks and make lots of noise ( even I did it once 😦 and I am sorry for that).

There are many more reasons but one thing I always tell Thais that you worship our gods, u speak language derived from our language then why the hell do u hate us and with the answere I am always surprised. They even dont know that most of the gods they worship are from India for them its only Buddha and Ganesh those who are from India rest are from thailand. They dont know their language is derived from sanskrit they dont know anything, so I cant blame them coz lack of knowledge makes them do so.

I am sorry if I hurt anyone’s feeling, some thai are so loving that I really respect them but this time I am writing about the majority.

Just one request “Please try to accept everyone and dont discriminate”

What has happened with you is very unfortunate. I have been visiting Bangkok almost every year for the past 10 yrs and have never come across any situation as mentioned above. We Indians are no good in treating tourists who visit our country. people get robbed, get into arguments, and even get “Raped” (recently happened with a Swiss tourist). No place is safe my friend. a person should at least have little knowledge about the place he is travel ling. If you happen to get a chance or take some time out of your schedule you should watch this program called “Scam City” on National Geographic. I haven’t had any problem at all and was always treated with respect and smile wherever I gone – 7elevens, malls, bus stations, railyway stations etc. Its true that Indians have a poor reputation for all the reasons Asok mentioned above. At one place we went to, they said to one male Indian cuatomer who tried to enter, “Sorry, no Indians.” Also, on two separate occasions, bar girls told me that they dislike Indians. Because of he language barrier they couldn’t explain why. I thought it was bizarre because Thais always seems so friendly to others.

Oh mister u had experienced very bad things. Anyway mister don’t ever judge all the country like this all. As my experience Indian people attempt to bargain too much and if there’s the rest of amount like 115 they willing to pay only 100 THB. Often they ask for wholesale price but take just a few and want the 100+ items price. If you were they what you think? It is true that you can’t judge people from the country will be the same behaviour. Anyway I welcomed every people no matter where they’re from.

Hello. Im from Bangalore, India and I visited Thailand just 2 weeks ago. I have been traveling to Thailand once every year. But this time, after reading your article, I almost cancelled my trip as I had this crazy fear of being discriminated and shoveled like a brown skinned maggot.

I have nothing against Indians of India and these are some of my thoughts I’d like to share. No offense intended.
Come to think of it, “Arranged Marriage” is a huge thing in India, but its probably the most racist thing ever!! We Indians discriminate people by “race” right at home! Upper caste, lower caste, brahmin, scheduled caste, fair skin, wheatish complexion, dark skin, and a whole load of crap and more crap.

And yes, I decided to go ahead with this trip AND i friggin LOVED every moment of this trip. Read on to know why!!

Before heading, I did a lot of research on racism and why Indians particularly are targeted. The facts are very revealing:

    1) Most Indians are weirdly disorganized. Coming from a “free” male-dominated country where you can unzip and pee on the roadside Whenever, or just just dump your trash Wherever, the perception is that Thailand is a country where “money” works, women drop their pants for money and cheap handy-crafty items are available anywhere for a bargain-able price. (So much cheaper than buying in US Dollars!yeah!). Well, thats the attitude Indians carry.
While : Things are expensive in India, women are difficult to be made ‘available for use’ and your money-power doesn’t work all the time. Its frustrating daaa!
They feel, in Thailand Everything ‘works’! A lot of us have our concepts wrong!

    2) Indians behave very disgustingly abroad. Mostly on Euro trips, Indian travelers are referred to “The Indian Contingent” as they are unfamiliar with Dry toilets, mostly unfamiliar with cleanliness, proper disposal of tissues, unfamiliar with deodorants and blah blah. Tour guides ask the American, European travelers to pack up before the “Indian Contingent” arrives as they mess up the bathrooms and restaurants. Indians are mostly used to ‘not’ flushing in public loo’s as you know… back in India, its “public”. Oh “hands” are the best spoons and forks ever! Just eat. Wash later!

    3) Indians are disgusting cheap and stingy while it comes to either bargaining at a shop or tipping at a restaurant. I was really depressed looking at this Tamilian aged couple almost harassing the thai shopkeeper to shut the hell up and sell them the dress they wanted to buy.

    4) Indians do not dress well. Unshaved beard, hairy arms, vests and trousers. They mostly think they are ‘cool’, care a damn, and own the place. Cover up and dress well fellas! No wonder most Indians are not welcome at bars!

    5) There are a lot of Indians who behave like “Cheapos’ especially the one’s who travel to thailand particularly to get laid. I’ve seen this right in front of my eyes. The sad part is that they assume every woman is ‘available’ and they can get away with her by talking cheaply and commenting over her clothes or physical features. Its like a fantasy world come true. The fact is that IT ISN’T!
Treat Thai women with respect – yes, any Thai woman, be it while shopping, or even at a massage parlor. Yes gentlemen, – respect them!!

    6) Quite a bunch of Indians who travel to Thailand are from villages or not from the ‘metro’s’ as you may call them. So they are unfamiliar with how the modern world works. Unfamiliar with perfumes, Unfamiliar with forks and spoons, unfamiliar with looking presentable. (I sound like a racist bastard, But I’m not. Apologies). Moreover since Thailand is an affordable foreign country, they feel “If we can afford, we can act how we like”!
    NO you cannot!

I really do sound crude, but I have nothing against Indians. These are facts you can see yourself in Thailand. I do look 100% brown skinned south Indian, but I did not go though ANY sort of discrimination or racist discrimination. I was treated as a foreigner even at the hotel where I stayed.

What went right for me :
    1) I ALWAYS dressed well and looked presentable. Ironed shirts, jeans, trousers and shoes.
    2) I always carried a smile on my face
    3) I always greeted anyone I met or spoke to with “Hello” or SawasdeeKhrup first , and “Kop Khun Kraup” or even Thank you wherever I shopped or asked for directions.
    4) I never spoke loud or aggressively.
    5) Perfumes and deodorants are widely available in Thailand. I Used them!
    6) I did tip well everywhere at restaurants and bars and they love returning customers who are nice and tip.

I think these are the little things we need to follow as Indians, and the trip to the land of smiles will turn awesomely great. Its mainly the politeness, neat dressing and the Right attitude that a lot of Indians are missing. In fact, the Tour guide lady asked me Twice where I was from as I she couldn’t believe I was from India! A lot of travelers came forward to talk to me. It was overwhelming as I thought my brown skinned face was a give-away for being an Indian! Felt great! Made a lot of Thai friends, Japanese and Chinese friends, and even a couple of Brits!

I’m 100% Indian, Love India and its country men and women. We need to change our attitude not just abroad, but even in our country! Its not that difficult!

I can’t wait to go to Bangkok and meet the new friends I made there, and also to make some more new friends! They’re awesome people.
We need to change the perception. We need to change our attitude! Lets do this people!!

    Kop Khun Kraup!!

Great response, Gautham. I’m a Caucasian and that was pretty much the message I was going to say. I’ve been all over Thailand, including smaller towns and villages etc, and I’ve had to make an effort to be as much like them as I can. A clean presentation, a smile, a polite manner and, importantly, Thai language will often, but not always!, change the response from one of fear or suspicion to one of warm friendliness and helpfulness. Go over there acting like a lusty old man or like some arrogant and condescending slave-owner then expect a cold response. Always expect to be ripped off though! They invented scamming!

Apart from your post, there is a hell of a lot of self-pity on this blog. Crybabies complaining about “racism”. Let me tell them that such a strategy only works against Western socialist governments who implement special race laws because they are reliant on mass immigration to pay for State pension schemes. It does not work against anyone else though. The onus is on YOU to make the effort in Thailand and in many other places. The more that YOU do, the more that THEY will do to help you. That’s just common sense.

If tourists don’t like the treatment they get from their hosts then they are probably best off taking their hard-earned cash elsewhere. I’d certainly reconsider returning to a country in which I was assaulted by a shop-worker after purchasing something! For me, Thailand is a bitter-sweet kind of place. 50/50. But it’s also a unique experience. There aren’t many places that crazy! It just depends on how much crap you are willing to put up with!

I totally agree with Gotham at this point. Brother, I have been living in Bangkok for past 25 years and I have faced the least discrimination like the other Indians do. Maybe It is due to the fact, I speak fluent Thai and I recently got married to my Thai wife. Thais are tend to be very friendly and adjusting people. If you talk to them politely with a smile, you will get positive response from them. Indians have damaged their own reputation in South East Asia, especially in Thailand. Most of the Indians visiting Thailand are uneducated. They have no clue how to behave in public. Indians talk very loud, smells bad, dress bad and has absolutely no idea how to be polite. I might sound like ANTI-INDIAN but these are the facts. But educated and well mannered Indians are also being treated the same way as these GAWAR INDIANS. Please do understand that Thais are not born with the HATE INDIANS genes. They treat Indians bad due to their past experiences. I would suggest all those Indians visiting Thailand to have a positive attitude and try not to be aggressive. Don’t go to places like Indra market or Patunam as they are cheap shopping areas.

Welcome to Thailand and enjoy your stay!!!!

Well said Gautham! I had one hell of a trip in Thailand and had no problems and always treated with respect wherever I gone. I have been visiting there since 2012 and this was my 3rd and best trip ever! I agree will all the facts you wrote and I even saw how some Indians were misbehaving there. All the above 6 points are the basics and they work everywhere! At many places I have been, I was the only Indian there but didn’t faced any problem or discrimination. At Siam Paragon, I even noticed a handsome Indian guy with a very cute Thai Gf! At some places when I said I am from India they were surprised and greeted me with smile and ‘shukriya’ Its an enchanting place to travel and live and I can’t wait to go again next time. To any of you having any doubts of fears, do not worry. Thailand is safe and friendly place both to travel and live! No wonder why sooo many westerners are living there! But that doesn’t mean to go careless. Always carry your passport in a tight pocket of your trouser/jeans and always keep few photocopies and mail yourself a scanned copy of it.

Mr. Gautham. I would say it short. You are PERFECTLY right about why Thai don’t like some Indians.

This page was shared in a famous Thai webboard. EVERYBODY said the same things you listed about why they don’t like some Indians.

On behalf of Thai, thank you to speak our mind. Please be our guest again any time you’d like.

You and anybody who behave like you always welcome, not just in Thailand, but anywhere in the world.

I totally agree with both Gautham and Thai Indian. They have touched on all the points I would have liked to have shouted out. I’m a proper brown skinned Indian and I’ve been to Bangkok recently and never faced any racism there. In fact I’ve had such a wonderful holiday that I’m planning another trip there next year. Let us not be hypocrites, India is even more racist than Thailand. Have we forgotten our Caste system, our ill treatment of our North Eastern citizens and our great North-South divide based on color. Don’t believe me; then just pick up todays newspapers and turn to the Matrimonial column for brides wanted. The first statement is ‘looking for a fair skinned etc. etc. Need I say more. And please don’t say only some do it, because thats another big lie. Quite a few of us do it and the rest of us stand by and watch the fun. We are just as racist as the rest of the world. We just don’t like it when it happens to us.

Thailand is truly the ‘Land of Smiles’ if you know how to behave yourself and treat your hosts with dignity. Enough said…

    Hi there,

It’s unfortunate to hear of your sad experience. Indians can be really great as well, and very welcoming according to the situation they’re in. I am not Asian, nor EU, but I appreciate Indians very much.

However, the only points I want to refer to are that Indians are also very much attached to the power that money confederate, and skin colours. It’s known among Indians to dislike dark skinned people, and favour light skinned ones in society generally speaking, but this phenomenon is known throughout all non white societies anyway, in Africa, Asia, Oceania, South America, South EU as well.

Believe it or not!!! As an Indian, I have been more discriminated in India than in Thailand. Indians are cheap charlies and they want to worth each and every penny they spend on anything. I have been going to places with my Thai-Indian friends with my Thai wife and I just can’t believe how Indians behave. I do understand their behavior is very much acceptable in India but not in any other country. Some examples to go (Group of 20 loud Gujus standing and arguing about where to eat, 1 south Indian couple smelling so bad and do heavy bargaining with the shop owner, another Punjabi group swearing loud and flirting with Thai girls walking by, and another group from somewhere North standing right in front of the gate and some women sitting on the floor). Do we call this civilized behavior??
Thais are racist and there is no doubt about it. I think it is the media which promotes anti Indian sentiments sometimes. But we can change their perception about the Indians. I don’t face racism so much and If I do then I talk to them politely in Thai and the HATING INDIAN sentiments just fade away. Thais are very easy to handle if you are polite, nice and smile to them. I love when Indians go to the shop and ask ” HOW MUCH?” “ANY DISCOUNT?” come on man!! Be gentle with them!!
We gave Thais the language, culture, food, etc etc but we ourselve forgot how to behave in a civilized society.

It is time to change ourselves.!! Don’t you think?? Dressing well, putting cologne, a smile on the face, polite attitude, and soft voice will do the trick……….Don’t believe me?? TRY IT

I just visited Bangkok this past July for a week with my wife. We are Indians currently living in Mumbai after spending several years outside of India in places like Kuwait, UAE, USA, Germany etc. This was my second trip to Thailand and my wife’s first. My first trip to Bangkok was very nice. 5 days Bangkok and 3 days Pattaya was really warm, friendly and the food was great. This time however, a lot of time was spent shopping and sadly we encountered so much racism that I sometimes I feel like going back to Bangkok and beating up some of those people. Most of the people we met who were NOT sellers or vendors were very nice and friendly and we didn’t face any racism from them at all. But the retailers were just a complete mess. They would openly show disgust once we entered their store and since I’m not one to shut up, I would fire back and intimidate them. My accent is far from Indian and when their little brains open up and hear my “farang” accent, they see a paradox that they cannot understand. In malls like MBK, we encountered the worst racism possible. They would look at us and make comments like “when I see your face I know you cannot buy it.” MBK, Khao San Road, JJ Market etc are places where Indians are the least respected. Bargaining is not a crime and if you’re a retailer, you better be prepared to face some of it. Making monkey faces when a customer asks to reduce the price shows what a stupid F’in unprofessional you are and the whores on Bangkok streets are probably far more tolerant and respectful than these souvenir selling low lifes. I know that Indians are some of the most irritating and obnoxious tourists and I do not deny that, but generalizing when it comes to running a business is just stupid because you cannot guess how much money is stacked up in someone’s bank account just by looking at his face. Thailand really needs to take racism seriously because these retailers are scum and they will drive off tourists if it continues this way. They also need to stop these menacing taxi and tuk tuk drivers from getting in everyone’s face and selling pu$sy ping pong shows and boom boom massage. As I mentioned earlier, normal thai people are very nice but the retailers are just plain a$$holes. My wife shopped nearly 25,000 baht worth of stuff for herself from stores that actually respected us. This is what happens when you treat a customer nice. In India, retailers know how to handle bargains and they always do it with a smile and calm mannerisms. They do not throw a fit if you decide to not buy from them. They know the nature of running a business and they do their best to be a good seller unlike in Bangkok where farangs is all they hope to cheat with their lofty prices and anyone who challenges them gets a thai monkey face.

      Hello Neil,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts here. Looks like you encountered a similar situation like we did.I too make sure that I never spend anything on Thai products – these days. Pity, because I am big on shopping. I agree with what you say – as retailers, vendors have to be ready for bargaining. And not treat their customers like shit, especially when their economy depends a lot on tourism. People around the world are definitely different and it would be best to just be professional.

Thanks for stopping by my blog 🙂

I am also Indian, 35 years old and have lived in USA / europe most of my life and I went to thailand for 20 days recently. I did not face any racism at the shops as you describe or going for shows, massages etc….actually quite the contrary you see I am gay and I went with a female friend to thailand, both of us dont look typically Indians and look more mediterranean plus we are extremely well dressed and very fit / in shape. So wherever we went in thailand all the women and gay men were totally hitting on me…in every shop i entered the thai sales women would drool over me and flirt with me a lot….and always smile at me however once in MBK …i remember i entered a shop and the same time this really dark, fat, badly dressed indian wearing ugly oversized sneakers also entered the same store….and he was treated very badly in front of me…he was asked to get out of the store actually and the same woman was smiling and drooling over me. Maybe the racism in thailand has to do more with the way you Appear rather than just the colour of your skin…it could be due to your personality …and dress sense…they just seem to like more beautiful people and are rude to the weird, fat, badly dressed indians….and sadly indians have very bad dressing sense and very bad bodies….

That said I have no intention to return to thailand now because i thought it was dirty and even poorer than india…in most good areas of delhi and mumbai when u drive around at least u see the wealth…u see nice cars, mbig roads, big mansions etc…but in bangkok u see only filth everywhere…and poor thais sitting all over the pavements and roadside…the entire country is also full of prostitutes and attracts the trashiest of low class white scum….most indians there are also going for the cheap sex nothing else…its a dirty country which makes me sick and the few thais i interacted with seemed to be really stupid people…they have no intelligence and are very lazy laid back people. Parts of their country are beautiful but i think there is much more beauty and culture to see in India especially with our palaces , luxury resorts and historical monuments as well as cultural diversity, food etc. we also have the himalayas ..where india lacks is in infrastructure…thais just have a better infrastructure but the real reason why thailand is a success is because of prostitution…nothng else…majority of tourists in thailand are losers all sex tourists..if they didnt have this sex tourism they wud never get so many tourists. I felt quite sick by their way of life, lack of sopshistication and their language was the most irritating…it sounds like that insect which makes a squeaky creeping noise right before dying.

what i noticed with racists when they hate a particular group of people. the first thing they dislike about that group is that they are filthy and stink. thats always the first thing they say about them.rude and cheap is another. well last time i checked thais arent known to be clean either or generous for that matter since they almost as poor as the indians. hell their countrys only growin an devolping quicker than india cuz they whore their men women n children in droves to western white men. theyd broke an 3rd world if it wasnt for them. they are seen as cheap an dirty to the whites, something they use and throw. and they be rude to indians, blacks an muslims as a result.tourists go there to enjoy not to be deliberatly rude and start trouble outside their turf an ruin their vacation or their life. who cares about penn state of the southeast.only thing good there is muay thai, beaches n hos

Some of the posters here are liars, idiots, losers, hypocrites and have overly inflated egos. For example this person over here called “SexyIndian” writes “I went with a female friend to thailand, both of us dont look typically Indians and look more mediterranean”. Now, I have noticed a lot of Indians like this person who would love to pass off as Mediterranean because they feel that looking like a Mediterranean and not Indian automatically deserves more respect, status and privilege. They try to distance themselves from the dark-skinned Indian look because apparently that what gets them more respect. I call these people losers with overly inflated egos!

This “SexyIndian” poster also writes “i remember i entered a shop and the same time this really dark, fat, badly dressed indian wearing ugly oversized sneakers also entered the same store….and he was treated very badly in front of me…he was asked to get out of the store actually and the same woman was smiling and drooling over me.”

Oh come on, please, please!! Stop blatantly lying here for heaven’s sake! You are obviously making this stuff up now. It sounds like you could write a script for another stupid boring corny Indian movie. I highly doubt that this ever happened. I can bet my whole life that you have over-exaggerated this event to a great deal or it never happened at all. You are making this stuff to make it seem that you were treated better because of your “Mediterranean” look, which I highly doubt now that you even had that. It also shows that you are a hypocrite because you try to distance yourself again from what you presume to be a stereotypically unattractive Indian look – “dark and ugly”, yet you are accusing Thais of being racist when you are yourself are. Why is that? You probably think that being dark equates to being ugly too, huh? Grow up! Firstly, you have clearly fabricated this story, and secondly, you feel that you were being treated like a King because you weren’t dark and ugly like this other person!? Look, I know Thais can be racist too, but I don’t think anyone including the Thais would commit such an act blatantly. That’s I am calling you a liar, an idiot, a loser, and a hypocrite.

You notice how other Indians behave because you are one. When you try to separate yourself from being Indian and look at other ethnicities, you would find that us Indians behave pretty good. If you go to a couple of different online forums and listen to what everyone’s opinions on which ethnicities behave poorly abroad, you would be surprised to find that Indians fare pretty good. It would come as a shock to most people about what you say – that Indians behave poorly. My point is, we are above average, still needs improvement to reach the levels of Japanese, who according to many people are the best behaved travelers and migrants. I am not going into who is the worst behaved so as not to offend someone.

First, I think most indians are not considerate. I do have my side of the story as well. Hi there! I’m Thai and I’ve read your blog. First of all, I feel so sorry for such bad experience you faced while you were here. Generally speaking, I think racists are everywhere. I’ve visited/lived in several countries before — Europe, UK, Southeast Asia and India. I’ve experience many racism in Europe. I also had bad experience in India because I was the only asian around there. (I lived in Himachal Pradesh) I even faced kind of sexual harassment by an Indian man. I was also cheated by a Tourist Service Center! However, I had several great Indian friends. They’re nice and we still keep in touch nowadays!

For me, once I walked on the street in downtown of Bangkok, one man (he was Caucasian, I didn’t know his nationality and, of course, I didn’t know him)…he walked pass me and spit at me. Even I’m in my homeland, I still face racism.

And for the shopowners or people who work at shops, etc, well…I’m not surprised. Oftentimes, they judge the customers by their looks. Yes, even the customers are Thai. The minute they found out we’re just window shoppers, they would tend to look down on us, give no attention and/or services, some even gossip! I sometimes experience this kind of thing even in the department stores.

All I want to say here is that racism is everywhere. It depends on individuals and their mindsets.

This is my third time writing in this forum. We have been blaming Thais at every point. Of course there are some elements which makes all Thais look bad. I travel to my workplace everyday and Every morning I see one aged bald Indian sitting and eatingin BTS. Sometimes I see him coughing and sneezing without covering his face. What do you expect the reaction of general people???

If you are coming to Thailand to teach in schools then it is not a good idea. Don’t forget Thais don’t travel abroad as much as others. They have a notion that only Whites can teach English no one else. I myself have worked in numerous places here like language centers and we’ll reputed universities.
*Remember Thai media promotes white skin the most and all Thais watch all day local Thai channels.
I do face racism but from low class people who have no education or never been in contact with Indians before.

Be nice with then and you will get same response in return. If I have survived here for 24 years and living happily then why can’t you??? Avoid Pratunam type places as it for low level people.

I have been living in bangkok for the past two years… Working here as an engineer in a Thai company. Yes a Thai company with no Indian otherwise… It’s obvious that there would be both good and bad reaction.. And so there were…
As for having faced any racial discrimination or any terrible situation i guess either i m lucky or i never took it that way.
I usually had a very good response from Thai people yes they do have a stereotype in mind when seeing a brown guy who looks like an Indian or pakistani… but it is upto us either we prove them wrong or just strengthen their belief!..
If someone does behaves with you in a bad way it’s their fault don’t go and make things worse it’s never a good idea to blame everyone for a few…
Yes it’s true that some Indians do behave very badly here and that’s what makes people to believe that all are bad…. The same way You ( mathangi) were able to generalize all Thai ppl same way they generalize us…..
After all said and done… A simple thing to be in mind . when visiting some other country just keep in mind that we are representing our people… And even if we get a bad experience doesn’t mean all are bad…. So relax and enjoy..

I just read your blog and I think it’s unfair for all Thais. For you who stopped by and read my comment, please be open-mindedness to what I’m going to tell you.

You’re the one who unfortunately faced the bad situations, Mathangi. All people in the world face the same problem called “racist”, not just you, Indian people. When Asians go to Europe or America, we’re sometimes ignored by white or black staff in the shops, just because we’re yellow. Is that different from what you have seen? No! Racist is everywhere, not only in Thailand.

You should know this, why most of clerks or service providers (restaurants, hotels, so on..) try to avoid Indians. Thais always face bad behaviors from Indian tourists (which you may not notice from your country mates). For example, bargain a bloody price (cost for wholesale maybe 200B, you guys bargain like 150B.) for god’s sake, who the hell going to sell for you. Some may try to steal goods when merchants are careless from their shelves. On my opinion, if the merchants/clerks need to check the quantity of goods you bought, it’s their right to do so. Why you have to be upset for this common thing? You’re so narrow-minded! Look at what your country mates have done to others first.

I have a very bad feeling towards your thought “money is everything for Thais”.
“You owned your money” doesn’t mean “you own everything in the world”. Thai women have been stereotyped being sluts and men as pimps. Is that what they get from you guys? Stupid!

Act nice, well-grooming, money not an answer, and you’re not a King to judge others as slaves.

Every country has both pros and cons. Please consider it well before judging it bad.

WHY ??? cuz the different looking guy always gets blamed. this is only the half of it.. So You dont know a single bit about real racial discrimination… your experience was in thailand and mine is in my Own Country… Think of all the Indian caste systems and other stuffs… so its easiest to say THAILAND and INDIA are the most racist countries in south east ASIA…

I almost cried every time i met the cruel lines. I don’t know even what I should comment about but I just want to tell you something. I might just a girl with not much experience but I can tell from all fifteen years I have live in Thailand that I am proud to be a Thai.

Just you face a bad luck and met bad guys in my country could you please do not judge that Thais are all bad. Because if everybody think like this, there will be nowhere in the world good enough to go then. I do not have any excuse for those guy who treats you that way more than a word “sorry” and “shame on us”. I know, I know it well. Since I remember I never do that to both Thais and foreigners. I never judge people by how they look like nor their skin colours. I’m AWAYS extremely excited and nervous in the same time I met a foreigner. Even my English are not so good some time even very bad but I tried my best to speak to them and answer their questions as much as I can. Many time that I cannot think of any English words then I just smile I say directly “I am sorry”. I did all my best to make sure that atleast they are feel a little bit good with my home country and they are didn’t make a wrong choice.
My comment may looks childish but this is all this girl can do for now. I also dream to be a good tourist too. :’D May be if it’s not too late we can met each other when I grow up.

I personally love thailand and I am married to a Thai man though too. of course there are times we all met bad thais but every day in my home country I meet bad people too, to me it does not matter where I go, there will always be the good in bad. I wish people would focus more on the positives too. I do not think your comments were childish at all. you are a very smart young person with a good heart.

but the same time I found many Indians are very good

it depends on personalities of the person
till now even if some Indians not good for me, I still love India

Not only Bangkokian, I’ve experienced that Thai people are pretty racist, but they just innocently have no idea what racism is.

Despite of race, nationality, origin. We also familiar with a discrimination against the different religious, working class, skin, body, appearance, etc. And just like I’ve mentioned, it’s innocently behavior, which is even more annoying as hell.

I’ve friends from widely culture, Chinese, Indian, Thai-Muslim, so I understand your point exactly.

However, I feel deeply sorry for you, and I’m not going to speak out to cover up those people who have done the worst things to you. I even love to spread your words, so hopefully there could be some improvement, somehow.

Really that happened ? Thai people are usually friendly and welcoming. Then again with all the white people going in and invading their country now like a yeast infection, because of muay thai kickboxing. If anything they should have that attitude towards the white culture all going there and invading there now, pretty soon that won’t be Thailand anymore with the whites imposing and forcing their ways over there with no respect for the laws there or anything.
What else happened with your experience ? sorry to hear that happened to you, its pretty surprising actually.

Also I think people from India may be obnoxious as individuals yet are not so racist.

Too many naïve whites think this white obsession is a compliment, it is not. These biases will erode our democracies and their good laws.

Thais are not disgusting…the problem is with Indians and India. Its a fact that Indians are not respected anywhere in the world – part of it has to do with the skin colour however a bigger part of it also has to do with indian behaviour, manners and attitude as well as india’s position and perception in the world. Indians that are sophisticated and polished people get all the respect everywhere they go in the world and indians who arent sophsiticated are not respected anywhere whether its thailand, singapore or USA. Also you cant compare indians to whites in terms of respectability – white countries are advanced places and their citizens have high levels of freedom along with the freedom to travel visa free to most places in the world this itself speaks about their acceptance. Whites also have stronger currencies so in a country like thailand they are received well whereas think about the majority of Indians who go to thailand? Its one of the very few countries that allows indians in with a visa on arrival – so all the cheap budget tourists from India flock to thailand and then complain that the thais arent welcoming…well dont go there then. Thais have no interest in coming to India….at least whatever the thais are they developed their country much better than India….look at the state of India today…its an unliveable country for most civilised people even a lot of other asians wouldnt want to live in india because our infrastructure is filthy, crime and corruption are disgusting and Indians have a huge arrogance about everything. When india gets developed and cleans up as a nation then indians will also be respected everywhere they travel just as americans are respected…but until then indians have to deal with the negative tretment they receieve in most places. Its not just thailand go to any country in europe and spend a few weeks there …in europe they hate indians even more…fact is no one likes indans anywhere because our country is one of the worst places to live in the world with the highest level of poverty in the world…this is also why indians need visas to go to virtually every semi developed country in the world.

I am an indian but I am westernized, i go to thailand 3 times a year and i get nothing but very very welcoming attitude from the thais, i love those people…even poor thais are happy they try to cheat u but they are not theives they are just trying to make a living. For me thailand is one of the most amazing welcomng and sweet country in the world …bangkok is the most visited city in the world after Paris….yes bangkok is no. 1 and paris is no. 2….and thailand as a country gets over 22 million foreign tourists a year wheras india gets only 6 million for such a huge country. If thailand was such a nasty unwelcoming place they wouldnt get so many tourists and they wouldnt have visa free travel for so many countries. Its wrong to say thais afe racist and unwelcoming…indians are far more racist ….indians only welcome whites no on else…when they say indians treat foreigners well in india they mean white foreigners only. Black visitors to india are treated horribly by indians…they are laughed at and called all sorts of nasty things to their face go read any blog where blacks have posted their experiences on india. Even other asians are not treated well in india they are called chinkies and made fun of. And if you see the way indians lick up to white people visiting india that is really sickening, in thailand i never saw thais treating whites like gods as they do in india. Thailand is not racist at all but india is definitely the most racist country in the world even officially it is the most racist. This blog is very misleading and indians have a habbit if taking the race card out each time but they dont look wt their own behaviour and arrogance.

I feel I should share a recent review I did on trip advisor as I feel it’s relevant. I’m Canadian of Indian origin. I grew up in Canada. I’m not a 60 year old divorced white sex tourist who cannot find a mate in his home country due to his lack of social skills. Nor am I some pervert who is looking for a 18 year old Thai girlfriend. I’m just a 30 year old guy who was here to transit on my way to Laos and Vietnam. I guess Thai people prefer being subservient to losers who care less about them. I’m always polite with a khup krun kap or sa wa dee khup but feel I was treated like a second class citizen often here. If I was white people would be bowing. It’s strange as the only places I’ve experienced this treatment was Bangkok and India. Never had an issue in Japan,China, Korea or other Asian countries.

    Here is my report:

I feel many Indians are used to getting treated badly. I would suggest you call people out on it. Next time I’m being served and then my waiter walks away half way through serving me to assist a white person, I will express politely to both that it is not appropriate and it appears racist.

Hello, I guess you had a bad experience.
I guess i’m a bad person too, since i was born Thai.

It’s a good way to judge all people, by the actions of other people.
You will come very far by that.

I have been a lot of places, and there of cause good and bad people, anywhere in any country.

But in general I don’t hate any kind of people. I only hate the person, that did the act and only that person for what he/she did.

But i guess you got to be a bad person to have a mind like me.

It is true though, that most Thai people likes lighter skins. That is only because of what the media is showing on the television. And people going to be brainwash by it, if growing up watching it.

But you have to be a bad person like me to not care what color people have for skin.

With all that said, you will never read this anyway or reply.
I wish you the best of luck in this planet we call Earth(^_^)

It all comes down to education buddy. Thailand is bottom last in ASEAN behind the shocking Myanmar (YES, MYANMAR! Where slavery exists still to this day!). You go up to any thai and ask them, “who’s martin luther king? Nelson Mandela? Malcolm X? Montgomery Boycott? Or any historical events or iconic figures involving anyone of color…they would be baffled out of their minds. Most thais are uneducated because you need money to go to school, regardless of money, the thai teachers have no idea what world history consists of.
Me, being african american and presently teaching in the south of thailand, incurred a mass of racism in my last province in Chanthaburi (southeast thailand) which was disgusting. Grimacing looks, no hello, rudeness, etc. Sure, I met some ok/decent people but one positive can’t cancel out hundreds of negatives. The south is much more open and accepting of people “of color.”

To break this down, Thailand is controlled by the “white” media. What the white media tells thailand, they believe. If the white media told them that anyone of color are violent, vigilantes and animals….they will believe it. If the white media tells them the world is flat, it is. Thailand is vastly obsessed with the color “white” too. They think anyone with white skin are the most fun, loving, and caring human beings on the planet, yet they tried colonizing just about every country the past 500 years. Again, terrible educational system leads to racism. In Spain, they throw bananas at dark players. You can’t be that uneducated to say people who are “black” are monkeys….but in Spain, I’m guessing education is not a virtue, just as isn’t here in Thailand.

I’m going to say one thing to y’all, if Thai people are racists, Indians are WORSE!

I’m Indian and the one year I lived in India was, to say the least, an eye opening experience. Here are a few points:

    *Indians don’t have manners
*Indians don’t know how to say Please, sorry and thank you
*Indians are impatient and cannot form a queue.
*Indians love to bargain for anything and everything
*Indians drive horrid…Indians drive worse than drunk drivers
*Indians are not sensitive to anyone besides their families
    *Indians fight for small things
*Indian men DO NOT KNOW how to speak to a woman
*Indian men are OBSESSED WITH SEX and they show it to everyone
*Indian parents do not emphasize good behavior and courtesy
    *Indians throw garbage everywhere
*Indian men think every girl and woman is a sex object
*Indian men start talking dirty like “hi, myself sharma, I appreciate your hotness and sexiness”
*Indians HATE dark skin and will spend thousands on skin whitening creams
*Indians openly use “blacky” or “darky” as an insult
*Indians brides and bridegrooms value is weighed by how WHITE and FAIR they are
*Indian movies (Bollywood) does not employ dark skin actors
*Indians hate seeing other Indians in foreign countries
*Indians don’t like their own people from other states
*Indians openly call South East Asians “Chinky eyes”
    *Indians HATE black Africans
*Indians cannot take criticism, they will go apeshit when you criticize Indians (Eg. Devyani Khobragde)
*Indians have A LOT TO LEARN AND ACCOMPLISH before pitting ourselves with western countries.

In addition, I feel terrible for the author of this blog who had to go what she went through. Losing passports is a hellish experience and I certainly, like you, would be insanely angry if I mistreated during your vacation in such situations. Glad you could come out of it and share your experience!

The customs and politeness would vary according to region so do not expect that, say if you come from Bengal and the custom in Pradesh Thai is the same. The least you could do is to say Sawaddeekhrup (masc.) or Sawaddeekha (for fem.) which is the evaluation of Hindu greeting, Svasti Srih!

SD, I agree with you. But, If the author of this post calling Thais racist and generalizing them; then you’re doing exactly the same thing by generalizing all Indians. All Five fingers are not equal and you can’t generalize any race and call them racist or cheap. To start with, I’m originally from India but living in Thailand (First Bangkok and now in Phuket) for over 5 years now. When I came to Thailand, I initially thought Thais of some kind of ignorant and racist people; but that’s not the case. Every coin has 2 sides and you have to understand why they dislike people from India. Indians are hated universally (whether you go to Thailand or any other countries in the world) and it’s for a number of reasons. As you said, they do bargain for everything, they’re arrogant, so impatient, lack of hygiene and don’t have manners. I’ve seen Indian guys visiting Thailand (mostly Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket) and they act as if they’re super rich and own the whole town. They talk loudly, often get too drunk and then misbehave. (*Punjabis are the worst). I’m in Phuket now and many clubs in Phuket don’t allow Indians as they often create trouble for other tourists. They like to do bargaining even if they buy a 100 THB shirt. You will notice that many Thai shoppers never approach and make an eye contact with Indians; they just ignore them and let them go. Indians like to show off and its fun to watch when their a** gets kicked. It just hurts their self esteem, i guess. Just last night, I saw few Indian guys approached a Thai sex worker on street and she was surrounded by all 4-5 Indians as she is an item for auction and everyone is bidding for her. I feel disgusted when I think that I’m born in such a country where people have no class and are hypocrites. Again, I’m not saying every Indian is an ***hole. If there are bad people, there are good people too. Just as we have days and nights, hot and cold, ugly and beautiful things. Existence knows how to keep everything in balance. So what happens, when a genuine person from India visits Thailand, he gets the worst experience and treated badly? Thai won’t show/tell you on your face, but deep inside their heart, they hate Indians. It is for reasons which they’ve learnt over the time. It’s not their choice, it’s their mentality. You ask any foreigners, how they get treated in India and they will tell you thousands of horrible experiences. Think if a genuine Nigerian black guy visits India and approaches you (*you might think he is a scammer) you won’t treat him the same way as you might treat a good looking French woman. All Indians look for is expensive clothes and fair skin. Is that all, is that how you judge someone based on their skin colour? They think they’re educated and smarter than westerners but if that’s the case then British wouldn’t rule us for more than 500 years. I just have a message to the author of this post; Please don’t judge other people based on your perception. It’s your experience that makes you to call them ‘racist’; They’re not. If Thais are racist then Indians are cheap low class scumbags on earth. They’re nice and down to earth and at least don’t shows off as we Indians do. I’m writing this because, I’ve been living here for 5 yrs and they treat me like their family. I understand you had some bad experience and your passport got stolen but again, Bangkok is a huge place and there are number of migrants from Philippines and Vietnam who commit crimes. I live and work in Phuket and can speak and understand Thai language. If you ever visit Phuket, do meet me and I’m more than happy to take you around few good places and show Thai hospitality. If you want to earn respect, first learn how to give respect to others. Peace.

Some of your points need a rethink on your part.

      1. Indians cannot take criticism
A U.S. federal judge has dismissed an indictment against an Indian diplomat. The judge ruled Wednesday that Devyani Khobragade had diplomatic immunity when she was indicted – these are the facts whether you accept them or not. http://www.voanews.com/content/us-judge-dismisses-indictment-against-indian-diplomat-in-visa-case/1870102.html – I think you would like to see Indians take it lying down even if the action is illegal … wouldn’t you !

      2. Indian movies (Bollywood) does not employ dark skin actors, Lets see . Ajay Devgan, Bipasha Basu, Shah Rukh Khan, Nana Patekar, Kaajol, Nandita Das, Lara Dutta, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone,Sunil Shetty and the list can keep going on and on

      3. Indian men DO NOT KNOW how to speak to a woman
*Indian men are OBSESSED WITH SEX and they show it to everyone
Indian men think every girl and woman is a sex object.

Hmm….. Let’s look at some surveys about rape/crime and other things

      4. Indians don’t have manners
*Indians don’t know how to say Please, sorry and thank you
Indian parents do not emphasize good behavior and courtesy

I suggest that you stop generalizing and speak for yourself. You can make these comments only if you got to know all Indians and their manners and their parents and their upbringing. So… please think before posting.

      5. And your final comment-who says we are pitting ourselves against the western countries? Says WHO ?- I guess that would be YOU again lol ! On the contrary the new India is working on developing strong relations with the west in particular the USA.

Look at some of the graphs / blogs/ data trends etc.

Peace be upon you my friend…..

But Indian customers never finish their needs, they call us every minute for another can of beer, and yes by the same passenger, Sometimes for Indian flight, we gotta trash all alcohol drink coz we cant make another services and securities.

why do we have seat number if you can sit anywhere you want? we gotta stuck at the airport for 30 mins to explain. asking. and begging Indian customers to sit at the right seat

my customers are from everywhere, but why most of the problem coming from Indian customers

I have been in bangkok and all over Thailand from the north to the south, east and west so I had a chance to meet many Thai people. There are bad people in every country, I’m sure there are many racist indians, whites, blacks, asians.. every country has its fair share of racist people and I agree that it is not good how ever that does not make the general population as a whole bad or racist.

How will I do in Thailand, how are they gonna treat me Ive asked an Indian guy I know who went to Thailand for vacation on what Thai people think of Indians/Bengali’s and how they are treated. This is the shit he told me thai’s think of Indian’s as poor greedy dirty people and the hotel’s, shops and restaurants wont service u properly they will think ur a poor thief trying to steal. Is this true oh lol kind of matches with what this post’s says here about what he is telling me.
And this was 2 weeks ago he told me this. Any country out there I should visit instead is Philippines better?

Oh and a bit more about What I want is to have fun 🙂 So yea I kind of have to be a sex tourist.
Its cheaper and risk free of not loosing half of your BANK or paying child support for !!!!0.M.G!!!
Canada is too risky to do any thing. Ive fooled around alot. Ive had a girl who took me to court because she had a kid and thinks I was the father. Cant take any risk’s any more
like this and I also heard prostitutes can do this too. Oh and also dodged a few arranged marriage bullet’s Mom is saying lol all I have to do is marry without a prenuptial and my dad will take care of the girl. This bitch is trying to set me up and trying to kill my ft job.!!!!!!!!
    OH FUCKING HORMONES GOTTA Grtjobgprenigergperpng;pienrgk;nergpntkrei
What the fuck dying of sex!!!!!!!!!!!! HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Scared to screw things now why this fucken law. I am really drunk soz

If you have good looks then you shouldn’t have problem banging chics back in Canada. Your frustration and desperation shows you haven’t got laid for years. Don’t come to Thailand as I reckon you will be behaving poorly and wants to bang every chic on the road.

I am European, I am perfectly white with blue eyes, and I still do not like the Thai people. They are fake, greedy and one does not really feel welcome in the country (but not every Thai is like that!!!, it is just a general feeling I have about the people). Many white western tourists in Thailand are “white trash” people – sex tourists etc. The Thai culture is not authentic anymore.
Their buddhism is not genuine, it is a charade of vacuous rituals and empty idolatry. Most of the country became one huge tourist trap.

I like much better the Khmer people in Cambodia. Unlike the Thais, they seem genuinely friendly and interested in you. The Thais are similar to Han Chinese in their superiority, racism and arrogance hidden behind fake smiles. And I believe the Thais are Chinese descendants, the people migrated to Thailand from China some 1000 years ago. I mysel experienced how racist the Thai people were towards some of the tribes living in Northern Thailand

Some 10 years ago, I made a huge 7 month trip across Asia – Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, China. I liked it best in China, but not because of the Han Chinese but because of the minority groups in China like Naxi people, the Tibetans etc. And unlike Thailand, China was not spoilt by tourism, so the culture was authentic.

Some of the nicest people in the world I met were in Eastern Turkey. They were genuinely friendly and hospitable and on many occasians invited us to stay in their homes.

If I go to SE Asia again, I will go to Malaysia or Indonesia (not Bali, but Sumatra or Java) or Vietnam. Thailand is not all that bad, but somehow it doesn’t have so much appeal to me as to other westerners. Primarily because the people and culture are not authentic anymore.

I wish I have read your blog post before coming here with my husband..If you type ”Thailand expat” on Google you only get positive ,exotic and awfully great reviews..That is the worst lie ever!!We come from Northern Europe(Greece) and I assure you, Thai people are not only racist towards Indians or other “dark skinned” individuals!!We came here with the dream of living peacefully and giving back to Thai people as much as we can give(through volunteer jobs e.t.c) They are just plain awful and they do not deserve it!!They only want to rip you off and after spending 3 months at the same apartment the employees of the Tesco Lotus downstairs keep mocking us!!They are too ignorant and uneducated to understand that we may understand a bit of Thai curses..Hopefully we are coming back to Greece and I can’t wait to speak freely about all this shit happening here..in The Land of Smiles…

What about all the shit happening in Greece? Recently an Indian professor teaching at a high post in Athens was beaten up by immigration police for no reason, he was asked for his documents outside the university where he was teaching and they refused to acknowledge his documents were genuine, he called for help and all his colleagues came to help and vouch for him in front of the police still they beat him up and almost killed him. At least Indians dont face this in thailand….greeks and spanish (catalans) as well as portuguese and many other mediterraneans are filthy trash and most racist awful pigs in the world….i live in france …I am Indian and I have never met a nice greek…they are all nasty people…in spain i still met some nice people…but greeks are disgusting…they lost the civilisation race centuries ago and are all ignorant jobless poor trash now….greece is the most corrupt country in the EU and they are desperately selling greek residency permits for. 250,000 euros…still not one wants it. All the rich greeks have already run away and abandoned greece completely…its a ruined horrible place…I wonder why u went to thailand…hoping to get some white treatment but u must be too broke to afford it properly and the thais realise that u are in their country to exploit them…thats why u were chased away,,,,thailand is full of extremely poor europeans and sooner or later these europeans realise they cant rule over the thais……ive been to thailand 20 times….i have no complaints with thais,..but wih spanish and greeks i have a lot of complaints….i wud never step foot in greece not after reading your police randomly beat up foreigners for no reason and even kill them sometimes…..countries like greece should be kicked out of Eu and left alone to rot and finish off which is what will happen to u because of your nastiness….ur economies are trash because europeans like greeks are extremely intolerant of foreigners…we live in a global world now where free movement is necessary for economic growth and sustenance….greeks are faaaar tooo racist to tolerate foreign immirgants and too cold and messed up to increase their own population,..people have no money to eat bread in greece where will they bring a child and feed him from? At least thai economy has a direction…and a flexible system….greece is rotting away…and they are such horrible people they dont even tolerate tourists….ive never been stopped in thailand by the police and asked tp show papers…as an indian travelling extensively in europe ive been stopedd at least a 100 times and asked to show papers…only in france they never say anything but the rest everywhere is bad in europe….and europeans for the most part are the truly msot racist disgusting people in the world….thailand is very welcoming for everyone….europe is not…unless u throw money around in europe and splurge like a billionaire u get zero respect….thats the truth.

I know this is a little old,but i was so tempted to comment: its not only for indians, latinos, africans, basically anyone who is NOT white will be treated with zero respect.
Smiles? lol they force that smile and grin as they talk shit about you.
My husband (indian) asked a price: 1,000bht, a blonde woman asked the same exact thing 2500bht. So lets say u pay more because you can, we still saw a blonde woman crying histerically as a thai shoopkeeper grabbed her arm and shook her so hard. Tourism police came and helped her.
So the rule goes like this: check the mirror, if u are white prepare for a shower of fake smiles (saw more than one lady smile and then turn her face to hide her disgust) if u are not white, go and enjoy the nature, avoid ALL shopping.

It’s not your skin dear, it’s your behavior. How could we feel bad with dark skin while we, in many regions, have dark skin too. How can we look down to Indian race while we grow up with Ramayana and most Thais are named based on Indian language. Think about it, dear. Indian people are famous in difficulty and over request. It is very difficult for air crew to service some Indians because they always ask for something every 5 minutes. Thais are not racist to the skin for sure. But politeness is very important. You have to respect and be polite to others.

For me there are 2 kinds of Indian. The normal one and the rude one.

I had many Indian teachers, they are polite and kind. I love Indian culture coz of them.
    My Indian friends also polite.

But for other kind Indian that tried everytime I have to deal with them, they seem like doesn’t even know what the manner is. I wonder everytime when Thais treat Indian rudely. I was like “why you have to be so rude to them. They are humans just like us. It is not fair to treat them like that”

Later, I understand why. The rude Indian is hard to understand things around.
Once, a group of tourist queue on the wrong counter. That counter already closed.
I told them “Sir, this counter already closed. Would you please queue on that counter? ”
He replied “Ok, ok” and stand on the same place doesn’t even to move. I go to him again.
“Sir, please go to counter number XX. No one going to work on this counter. No one going to check in for you. Please move.” and they still on the same point.
I tried again, if this time I will not success I will leave them missed their flight.
“Sir! go to your counter number xx. You cannot stand here. Go, go.”
He was like “Sorry, sorry. It’s ok.” Then moved all of this peoples to the right counter.

I was felt really bad to be rude to other peoples but everytime I deal with rude Indians I have to be aggressive coz they will never listen to me if I being nice and polite to them. I don’t understand, is this a kind of Indian culture? That to be aggressive to deal or get something?

To add more things, The rude Indian will spread around the garbage everywhere they go, especially when they eat. On the buffet line, they tried the food before get it in their plate, if they dislike it they will leave in on the food bar. Can you guys imagine? A food with bite on it, left on the food bow. And… someone them think, to pick some bow, folk and spoon out from the restaurant is normal thing that they can do. It is hard for them to understand any regulation of somewhere they visit.

I did not hate Indian coz I understand non all of them are rude. As I mention at first. I have so many lovely Indian friends. When I have to deal with Indian, I have to be polite as I do to everyone. If I find that they are the rude Indian, I will decided to be aggressive to them.

Please understand, not all of Thais hate Indians. And I also understand not all Indians will be rude.

In my experience the worst tourists in Thailand were from India, Pakistan and the Middle East. Incredibly abusive towards poor Thai people. Thai people tried and tried to be patient and kind but their abusive attitude eventually lead to Thai people working in the tourist industry to hate them. I’m sorry you had to experience the result of decades of abusive Indian tourists in Thailand. I lived in Thailand for five years and always stayed away from touristy areas because the Thai people there are very jaded and not typical Thai people or attitudes. And isn’t your attitude and anger towards all Thai just a bit racist too? Yeah, I thought so. You got the wrong end of the deal here, but it wasn’t really you, but the generations of poorly behaved tourists from India visiting Thailand that caused this. The other thing I would say is that many tourists in India get a fair amount of abuse, especially female tourists from other Asian countries. Gangs of Indian men, because there are no women outside the home in India, will follow them and harass them to the point that they fear for their lives. It is also one of the many reasons Thai people do not link Indians. Again, sorry, but that has been the experience of many female friends of mine when they tried to visit India. They will never return.

I read this forum before my trip to Thailand in Nov 2014 and I must say I was quite worried. However, my experience was quite the reverse and I did not face any problems at all. I found people to be friendly and sweet (except a solitary taxi driver who was really rude and throwing bags around). In fact one Thai woman, despite not knowing proper English, spent quite some time explaining to us the way to our hotel (so sweet!). We shopped at the Platinum Mall and really had a good experience with local people smiling at us and offering discounts and had no problems with Thai people when we were out and about. Rather I found some groups of fellow Indians (or could be Pakistanis) to be badly behaved (although I would hate to generalize).
I am sorry you had to face a rough time in Thailand for no fault of yours but I don’t think Thai people in general are bad towards Indians. If you always wear a smile and be courteous to them yourself, I don’t think there is any reason to worry for an average Indian tourist.

I also have a bad time with your dirty places, very cheat rigsaw and the shops where always want to get extra money from me. However, I’m positive enought to keep thinking that no places are perfect. Even coins have two side. I choose not to declare whatever bad things in India since i think it’s not fair. This is because i have been there for travelling and short time. Moreover, I have never been to every single place in india. My own opinion cannot judge what India really is.

Hi Titima – thank you for your comments. I had no intention of feeling so strongly – but it was just that I had one bad experience after the other. Maybe if I had someone level headed as you in that short span of time , i would have felt differently. I was most upset with the person who tried to beat my dad. And for no reason at all. After we purchased so many things from her! We were shocked!!!
Nothing else affected me so much – I’m sure you would have felt the same way if some one is against your family.

Again I have no wish to fight either – but I really appreciate you writing in. Thank you!

My opinion and personal experience of Thais is that they are racist, money hungry, rude, ignorant, corrupt to the core, violent, scammers and the list goes on. There is no hope for Thailand. If your thinking abou coming here for holiday I strongly suggest you do due diligence in researching everything be it positive or negative. I had an excellent time vacationing in Thailand and in general, I found the Thai people we interacted with to be very friendly, helpful and kind. Modes of transport like the tuk tuk are always dicey in terms of overcharging you but that goes for most countries and its nothing a little street smartness can’t outdo. I will, however, point out that we were subject to mild undertones (actually not so mild) of racism. Our group of about 8 people (yes, we’re Indian and very well behaved,well-dressed, cultured and well-mannered) went to Levels club in Sukhumvit for a night of dancing and celebration. We were delayed, and ultimately denied entry to the club under the pretext of there being a private party at the club. A wait of about 10 minutes revealed that any other random visitor to the club, Asian or Caucasian, with no apparent idea and certainly no personal invite to the ‘party’ was being allowed entry, as long as they were not Indian. I was quite stunned. We were left standing by the rails, watching them flagrantly display very obvious preference of race. We of course walked away to a better, more ‘global’ club, but I vowed to write about this for it to be known. So this was it. Incidentally, I also overheard a cranky Thai saleswoman at MBK mall telling my fellow countrymen who were merely browsing through her wares, that this wasn’t their country, and she shouted it out more than 3 times in an unwarranted display of aggression. Aside from these incidents, our stay was beautiful, the country is gorgeous and the food is to die for. I’ll definitely be going back. Ain’t no racist dimwits gonna stop me.

Also, to all the people who so confidently profess that Indians are stinky, and ill-mannered and “all of them” (which would mean like 1.25 billion of us – a ludicrous conclusion!!) misbehave wherever we go, there’s a reason racism exists today. Its called racial stereotyping. So unless you have met every single Indian that exists today, be discerning when you feel like passing judgement on an Indian tourist, shopkeeper, co-worker and such. We’re probably a whole lot nicer than a bunch of people you know. I have seen countless other foreigners, which is to say, non-Indians,(yes,good heavens!Caucasians too! behave so badly as tourists that whatever guilt and shame I may have occasionally harboured on behalf of our not-so-well-mannered brethren was alleviated considerably.

I didn’t have any of these racial encounters though I go out with family to many areas which are not tourists spots in Bangkok. Thai people welcome you and many of our Thai friends come to our place to have indian cuisine. My wife has a habit of bargaining and sometimes she put me into uncomfortable situation with shop keepers but than if you are not buying than just politely say khop Khun Krup and move on. I believe it’s more as to how you conduct yourself in public place, if you are good, enjoying yourself and not disrespecting or nagging with people around unnecessarily than you won’t have problem. I have seen that few Indians who are tourists feel that they can go around spitting on street or throwing garbage or not giving seat to elderly/ pregnant women in BTS, but by doing this you are actually giving bad name to all Indians.

Used to love Thailand. Now i wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. Although i still like normal self respecting normal thais. I’m severely pissed off at those who only see value in money. For people who hold the concept of ‘face’ so high, it’s funny how they treat every foreigner as a meal ticket, i mean where is the self respect in getting your guests to pay for you and your friends when going out.

They may show disgust to Indians and to be honest some Indians defiantly deserve that treatment (for being arrogant, cheap and smelly) but I’ve found that they generally don’t really like any one foreign if they aren’t willing to shower them with money.

After visiting Thailand frequently over the lat 15 years, i won’t be going back to the land of smiling ponces anytime soon.

Dark people always complain that Thais are nicer to whites. But it’s simply not true there like that for everybody. Most of the numerous murders emanating from there the victims are white. I would say this has something to do with there inferiority disorder recognising westeners as much richer then themselves. Even with this knowledge I still can’t understand why there so bitter, all nationalities are treated with such respect in Australia I wish it was the same everywhere but I guess there not capable of seeing past there own inferiority disorder and ethnic nationalism.

Suprised to see this thread is still going on , seems like most people have had bad experiences visiting thailand . I am currently on my trip to thailand and it has been a good one so far . I have not read comments after 2013 but most of the comments giving reasons are in fact correct.
Thailand is a beautiful country and clean and getting more westernized with each passing day .
    Some hard facts :
    1. Thais behave very well with white people and are very respectful to them even if they are wearing singlets, bad clothes , shoes that should have been thrown out a decade back etc. They are not so respectful to Indians.
    2. Indians behave like shit especially in a group . Starts off from Suvarnabhumi, line cutting , people shooing them away still some how wriggling into the line shamelessly, but WILL not stand in que. Me and and a couple of other travelers even asked them to get in line and even told them that people like them have made life of every traveling Indian difficult . Forget Thai’s, I would treat such people with contempt they way they conduct themselves, unfortunately all of us get stereotyped due to such dickheads/ and ofcourse the ones without the dicks are no better .
3.Behavior in public places – atrocious more than one instance , A family was celebrating a birthday in a Svensons outlet , so much noise and purposeful shouting and screaming , they waitresses were looking in but thankfully too polite to be rude to them . Just then right behind another couple arguing over an order made, Thai’s do not understand english properly so when ordering etc it is our job mainly to ensure that they understand what we are ordering / asking , again leaves a poor impression of us as a troublesome lot, who would want to deal with such people ?? would you ??
    4. Bargaining and last minute back outs, our people seem to have no issue regarding this ,
5.Some indian touts are selling fake watches now and they are walking behind and troubling tourists the way they do in any tourist place in India , irritating them , none of the Thai vendors were seen doing it .
    6. Rich Indians feel like they have bought a place when they eat or stay there ( case in India is same and many hoteliers , actually most prefers whites to us in high end hotels in India too . ( I have a lot of hotelier friends ) ,Ihave faced it once in The park Chennai , I walked out and when the manger said he could provide us the same seats which he could not while at the same time a few Koreans were sitting at the exact opposite location .
7.We browse alot and dont buy anything so they are prompt when an white man enters ans browses and when we enter and browse , their behaviour is fine once they know you are a customer and not just there to waste their time .
I am very good to people , respect them and almost always have got a good response in most countries. But we have to ensure we respect the local culture and not act as uncouth elements .
All said and done , Thailand can be enjoyed but dont expect to be treated at par even with a white man who earns 1/ 10 or even 1/100 of what you earn of social status you enjoy in your country unless ofcourse they know you before hand , which would make things easier.

Not the best place for Indians , but yes perhaps the sex is still there , did not try it

Comeon guys there are good people and bad people in this world. All are God’s creatures no one can decide on how to treat the black/ white, according to me all are equal and all have equal rights to live their life.

It was just a bad day for you guys to face bad people. I have been to Thailand with my sister. For the first time in our life we went alone. Our parents never allowed us to travel alone. But after visiting Thailand, I am a great fan of this place and would love to visit again and again. People are so friendly and helpful. Everyone whom I met was extremely helpful with positive attitude towards tourists and always with a beautiful smile on there face. After visiting Thailand I can confidently travel anywhere in the world. I am Thankful to Thailand that they treated us with great hospitality which gave me a kind of confidence, that people in other countries know what human value and love is.

I am Imran from Bangalore, India. yes I am an Indian and I can strongly believe that Thai people are very helpful and lovable, from the hotel staff to boat pier staff and common people on the road were helping us with anything and everything. Infact I am so glad that I found “Fluk” our hotel Front office employee”. He always gave me suggestions and ideas to save money. Thanks Fluk.

Only one advice for those who think Thais are rude. “Give respect take respect”. If you meet bad people and they do not behave well with you, just ignore them, give a smile and walk away. I know some of you will not telerate any nonsense from anyone. But best thing is to avoid getting into anykind of argument or issues. Try to avoid such instances and dont think about them. Be cool!

We indians are known for love and emotions. When we know what Love is why cant we handle such situations with Love.

    Love you all,

Yes, the reason why Thais hate Indian is their bargaining culture, after you agree to pay but, however, you take more discount without accepted by seller. Then you ran away. It so called cheated.

you have no idea how thai are really the scum bags of asia, and the world itself, the thais would kipnap boaters who flee their country (for example vietnamese people) rape women and girls as young as 6 years old in front of their families, slash throats beat them with hammers, some would be shot or simply thrown overboard for quite some time and the worst thing is, the Thai government never took ANY ACTION towards it, They are the true Cockroaches of asia and i will never accept Thai’s for as long as i live for what they did to my people, the whole asia knows this.
